Wildlife project helps Hong Kong families settle into life in Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire Community Foundation (HCF) awarded a £5,000 grant to the Hong Kongers in Bishop’s Stortford, supporting a community wildlife project that helped Hong Kong migrants settle into British life while learning about the local environment.

The project delivered a range of family-friendly activities, including wildlife education sessions, litter picking, pond dipping and conservation projects such as building bat boxes and homes for local creatures. A Cantonese-speaking local teacher led the sessions, helping both children and parents discover the fascinating wildlife of Hertfordshire — from hedgehogs to bats — many of which were unfamiliar to those coming from Hong Kong.

The initiative not only introduced families to their new surroundings but also provided opportunities to meet others, build friendships and preserve aspects of Hong Kong culture while integrating into the local community.

Paul Robin, CEO of Hertfordshire Community Foundation, said: "We were delighted to support this project which combined community wellbeing with environmental education. It provided a wonderful way for families to feel at home in Hertfordshire while contributing to local conservation efforts."

The activities were open to the wider community, with priority places given to people from Hong Kong.
