Hertfordshire Children's Fund: Reflecting on the past year

In the past year, the Hertfordshire Children's Fund has provided crucial support to families in crisis, thanks to the generosity of its donors.

Through donations, the Fund has awarded 516 grants, averaging £302.81 each, directly benefiting over 1,500 individuals with essential household items. These grants ensure that children remain healthy, safe, and clean, even in the face of adversity.

One example of the Fund's impact involves a mother and her two children who were evicted twice after falling behind on rent following the father's death from cancer. Placed in an unfurnished permanent home by the local authority, the family had only a microwave for cooking. The Hertfordshire Children's Fund stepped in, providing a washing machine and a cooker, complete with installation, significantly improving their living conditions.

Essential support for families
The Hertfordshire Children's Fund focuses on supplying families with vital items that many might take for granted. Thanks to donor support, the Fund has been able to provide:

  • Children’s beds and bedding

  • Essential white goods, including cookers, washing machines, and fridge freezers

  • Baby equipment such as pushchairs, cots, and car seats

  • Specialist medical equipment, including special needs pushchairs and hospital-grade waterproof mattresses

A fair and thorough allocation process
Each grant application is meticulously assessed by a panel to ensure that funds are allocated fairly across the county and only to those in genuine need. Instead of providing funds or vouchers directly to families, the Fund collaborates with trusted professionals like social workers, health visitors, and school support workers. These intermediaries verify the family’s situation and ensure that the assistance reaches those who need it most.

Growing demand and continued support
The demand for the Hertfordshire Children’s Fund continues to grow, and it is only through ongoing support and generosity from donors that the Fund can continue to meet this need.

Leyla, a Supported Housing Officer, has highlighted the significance of the Fund for families moving from hostels to independent accommodation. She stated, “The Hertfordshire Children’s Fund has been an absolute lifeline. The application process is clear and concise, and the panel decision is quick, allowing families not to wait too long, which can be emotionally draining. Grant coordinators are extremely helpful and respond to any queries promptly. HCF is such a beneficial service to all families in need.”

As we look to the future, the Hertfordshire Children's Fund remains dedicated to supporting families in crisis, ensuring that every child has the essential items they need to thrive. The generosity of donors continues to be the cornerstone of this vital support network, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
