Organisational Needs Analysis: How the service works
The first step is an organisational needs analysis (ONA). The advisor will arrange to visit your organisation to meet a senior manager(s) and/or trustee(s). The person(s) involved should have oversight of the organisation's overall strategy as well as responsibility for the development of the workforce. Before proceeding your advisor will email the forms and templates in advance so that you have a chance to gather relevant information, data etc to maximise the effectiveness of the meeting. You will also be asked to sign a Scope of Service agreement at the outset to ensure that there is clarity around the process and responsibilities.
The first meeting typically takes around 2-3 hours and there will be subsequent follow up by both parties. Your final outputs will include the ONA itself, a training needs analysis for your staff and volunteers and an action plan. Where training or other development is identified, your advisor will also be able to help you to find appropriate provision.
All organisations interested in applying for the workforce development grants are required to have an ONA and have their application supported by an advisor. Two options are available for the ONA:
- DevelApp ONA - the organisation is registered to use HCF's organisational appraisal tool . This will identify key gaps in each main functional area and identify priority actions to address them. Resources are also recommended for each action. The ONA involves working through the areas identified to see what skills and development issues are related and assess training needs.
- A standard ONA - focussed on assessing the organisation's strategic priorities and relating this to the workforce - its current capabilities and how it needs to develop.
