Funding Local Causes

Addiction charity receives financial boost

A £4,998.50 grant made to The Living Room will help provide treatment for adults in Hertfordshire fighting the illness of addiction.
Awarded by local charity and grant maker, Hertfordshire Community Foundation (HCF), the money is being used towards setting up a specialist drugs and alcohol group at the Stevenage centre.
The Living Room offers free, day-time, group counselling, peer support and workshop therapies for all addictions including alcohol/ illicit/non-illicit drugs and behavioural addictions e.g. eating disorders, self-harm, obsessive compulsive disorder and gambling.

Rita Cooper, Operations Manager for The Living Room said: “Our work saves and transforms lives. We are setting up these groups following feedback from our service users who have said that it is easier to talk and discuss issues in smaller sessions that are specific to their addiction.
This grant is vital in enabling us to fund these sessions which will allow people to make life-long changes through recovery and abstinence from their addictions”.

Director of Hertfordshire Community Foundation, Helen Gray, said: “As identified in our needs analysis research Hertfordshire Matters, drug and alcohol addictions are an issue within the county. The Living Room is taking active steps to help those in need and their families. We are pleased that we were able to support this valuable and worthwhile initiative”.

The Living Room Stevenage hosts free daytime group therapy for all addictions. The facility also offers a free, Ofsted registered crèche, to enable parents with young children to attend treatment whilst their children receive high-quality childcare. Case Study: The Living Room

George’s* life was spiraling out of his control. What started as social drinking had escalated to a harmful addiction of daily alcohol and cocaine use.

He knew he had to stop if he wanted to reclaim his life and future, however each attempt to quit ended within a few short weeks. “After every relapse I fell further than the last time in a spiral of depression and suicidal ideation causing suffering to all those dear to me”.

George was introduced to The Living Room by an ex-client and started attending sessions daily.
Talking of his experiences George says; “I find the Feelings Groups followed by the afternoon workshops cathartic, with practical ideas and thought-provoking discussions on how to better understand the emotions and thoughts underlying my addictions. They are also helping me to connect with my fellow clients and attend local AA meetings, and I appreciate I am not alone in my suffering”.

When asked how the Living Room’s approach differed from other therapies he had attempted George responded; “There is more exploration of the feelings and emotions that underlie the addictive impulses than at other services. There is more of a sense of genuine understanding, warmth and empathy than at the other services I have used”.
George continues his treatment at The Living Room and is now looking forward to a brighter, healthier future. “I am hopeful that on leaving The Living Room I will have in excess of serval months’ clean time. I hope to have a support network of people in recovery and the ability to recognise and control the thoughts and behaviour that have previously led to relapse. I am unspeakably grateful for the existence of The Living Room, an amazing antidote for the baffling and personally destructive affliction of addictions. The service provides many lost, broken people to rediscover their identities and lead lives enabling us to become productive members of society”.
