Grants for environmental projects in Hertfordshire

We manage a large number of funds and make grants to address a broad range of needs in the county via our HCF Grants. You can let us know you have applied with the Environmental Fund in mind in your application.
Grants of up to £5,000 are available for projects that aim to improve our local environment in Hertfordshire, help Herts residents reduce their energy use, and educate about the impact of climate change.

We are looking for projects that do one of more of the following:
  • Allow local communities to get involved in environmental activities
  • Encourage behaviour changes that benefit the environment
  • Educate about the environment and/or the impact of climate change
  • Protect and restore the natural environment in Hertfordshire

    Examples of possible projects include:
  • Regeneration of green spaces and local habitats
  • Water conservation and stream and river protection
  • Organised litter picking
  • Citizen science projects
  • Community energy
  • Cycling, walking and other greener transport schemes
  • Projects that help residents improve the energy efficiency of their homes
  • Libraries of things
  • Community repair events
  • Food waste redistribution projects
  • Community vegetable growing

    We will not fund:
  • Contributions to large capital appeals, including things like installing energy efficient lighting in charity offices
  • Projects for schools (unless there is a significant wider community benefit)
  • Animal welfare
  • One-off events with no long term benefit

    Spring Walk raises money for local charities
    Over 40 enthusiastic participants gathered in the picturesque Hertfordshire countryside in Buntingford on a sunny morning on 18 April to raise funds and awareness for a good cause. The spring walk was organised by Hertfordshire Community Foundation’s (HCF) Ambassador Henrietta Buxton and graciously hosted by HCF Trustee James Hopkins and his wife Sarah.
    High Sheriff Awards celebrate charitable projects across Hertfordshire
    Liz Green, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, publicly recognised and rewarded ten Hertfordshire voluntary organisations at the 2024 High Sheriff Awards ceremony held on Tuesday, 26 March 2024. The annual Awards, now in their 29th year, celebrate the excellent work undertaken by charitable groups and individuals who have made a significant contribution to Hertfordshire’s communities.
